What is Public Legal Education?

Citizenship Foundation

Lawyers in Schools sessions aim to develop young people's understanding of the law so that they can know their rights, understand their responsibilities and confidently navigate their way through the legal system knowing when and where to ask for help and further advice.  This is an example of Public Legal Education (PLE).

There are many examples of public legal education across the UK. Recently, an organisation called Plenet (the Public Legal Education Network) was established, in partnership with the Citizenship Foundation, the Ministry of Justice, and other organisations, to continue building the body of knowledge around creating successful PLE.

Plenet's website (www.plenet.org.uk) contains lots of information about PLE projects and the network provides a space for practitioners and researchers to share information and ideas, to promote good practise in delivering PLE and to improve awareness of the need for an value of PLE.

If you would like more information on PLE, please follow this link to Plenet's leaflet 'Public Legal Education: Improving lives, empowering communities.'
